David M. Rubenstein Visitor Center and Monticello
Wednesday, September 23, 2015 - 10:00am to 4:00pm

Note: Due to high demand, we recommend that you make an advance reservation via the phone at 434-984-9880. If you don’t yet have a reservation, please expect a long wait time for a house tour. It is also possible that we will sell out of house tours; in that case, tickets will be available at a reduced rate, allowing access to all other home educator day activities, and the gardens, grounds and visitor center.

Explore the Thomas Jefferson Visitor Center including the film Thomas Jefferson’s World, and innovative exhibitions on architecture, the Monticello plantation, and the creation of the United States, and the hands-on Griffin Discovery Room. Then, take a special guided tour of Monticello, the house where Jefferson enjoyed his retirement years with his large extended family.

Visit Monticello's Mulberry Row to learn more about the lives of enslaved people who lived and worked at Monticello, and roll hoops and play games on the West Lawn, just as Jefferson’s grandchildren did 200 years ago. Stop by the interactive indoor and outdoor activity stations that will allow students to explore a variety of Jeffersonian topics, including a “From Bean to Beverage” American Heritage Chocolate Tasting and historic chocolate presentation.

New this year! Students can dig in a mock excavation and learn proper field techniques, such as digging, screening, and identifying artifacts.  (The dig free, but reservations are required.)

Light meals and refreshments are available for purchase at the Monticello Café.  Enjoy the Shop at Monticello, which provides shopping opportunities for books and other learning materials related to the exploration of the worlds of Thomas Jefferson.

Home Educator special activities offered from 10 am–4 pm.  The grounds will be open from 8:30 am–6:00 pm.  Reservations are recommended though not required.

Way to go, Monticello......way to alienate an entire group of homeschoolers by scheduling your ONE 2015 homeschool day on Yom Kippur, the holiest, most important day of the Jewish year. As much as I want to teach my daughter about what a wonderful person Thomas Jefferson was, I can't even wrap my head around your decision to choose this day for this event. This will end any thought of EVER bringing my daughter to Monticello......truly, truly disappointed in your decision.

Oh, and I just looked at the name on your visitors' center.....David RUBENSTEIN?? I'm going to go out on a limb and say he is (or was) probably Jewish, too. I wonder what he would think of this??

Thank you for commenting, and we understand your frustration and disappointment. Scheduling Home Educators’ Day on Yom Kippur was certainly not our intent and was a mistake we should not have made. Home Educators’ Day has been on the fourth Wednesday in September for several years which is how we scheduled it for this year. That said, we should have looked closely at the calendar and seen the conflict. It was an oversight, and we offer our deepest apologies. We have immediately looked at future years to avoid a similar mistake again. We hope that you and your daughter will have the opportunity to visit at another time. Please feel free to contact us directly through education@monticello.org if you would like to hear about other opportunities for this year or next.

We are scheduled for a tour at 12:10 and 12:15. Are are we able to come earlier and participate in the activities and see the grounds before our reservation time?
Laurie

Hi Laurie, and yes - absolutely! Your ticket gets you access to Monticello the entire day, and we're open to the public 8:30AM - 6PM. Come as soon as our doors open to enjoy the museum galleries, intro film, and grounds. Special activity stations will be open and active from 10AM - 3PM, and you're welcome to stay until 6PM if you'd like. Thanks for your question and we'll see you soon!

I'm new to this - is the time on the ticket the tour time? If we do not buy tickets in advance for Home Educators Day will we be able to schedule a tour when we arrive on Wednesday?
Shannon

Shannon, thanks for your question. You're correct that the timed ticket is the time your guided House Tour begins; we usually recommend arriving at least thirty minutes before your scheduled House Tour time so as not to miss it. Admission gets you all day access to the museum galleries, grounds, additional outdoor tours, and special drop-in activity stations, but that House Tour time is specific. As long as we have not yet sold out for the day, we will be selling walk-up tickets on Wednesday. I hope you can join us!

Is the “From Bean to Beverage” American Heritage Chocolate Tasting and historic chocolate presentation at the Monticello Museum Shop included in the cost of this tour? Thank you, Traci C.

Hello Traci, and thanks for your question. YES - The American Heritage Chocolate Tasting presentation and demonstration is included in the day's ticket cost and will actually be one of the drop-in activity stations, open 10AM - 3PM. We hope you'll come by for a taste or two!

Less than two weeks until our Home Educators' Day! This year's event will feature costumed interpreters along Mulberry Row demonstrating crafts such as basket weaving and period cooking, as well as storytelling and traditional sing-alongs. Lots for students of all ages. We hope you can join us!

Is there an additional price to tour the house? Or is that included in the home days price?

Hello Vicki - Thanks for your question. The price of the ticket DOES include the scheduled house tour, as well as access to all the special home educator activity stations (10AM - 3PM) and outdoor tours of the gardens and Mulberry Row throughout the day. It looks like we'll have great weather for the event - I hope you can make it!

Is there a special price for the tour including the upstairs of the house for homeschooling day?

We home-school my 8 and 5 year old, and also have a 3 year old, and 15 month old. We plan to bring them all to the home-school day and am wondering if other families do the same and if you think the younger two will still find it interesting.

Does the "special guided tour" include upstairs in the house? Thanks!

Thanks for your question. If you’re interested in visiting the upstairs of the house, please reserve a separate “Behind the Scenes Tour” ticket for your visit. Standard house tours include all rooms on Monticello’s main floor and last about 40 minutes. The Home Educators’ Day “special house tours” will be tailored with students in mind and incorporate more hands-on opportunities than the typical house tour. See you on the mountain!

Is it correct that tickets must be purchased in advance for this event? If so, when is the last date we can purchase them? Thanks so much!

Thanks for your question. Online ticket sales will close the day before the event. Walk-up tickets will be available for purchase as long as house tour spots are available. To ensure a smooth day, we recommend purchasing your group's tickets in advance by phone or online. See you on the mountain!

Mary, thanks for your question. The Visitor's Center opens at 10AM on Home Educators' Day; that is in keeping with our winter hours. We look forward to welcoming students and their families then!

If we have a reservation for the tour at 10:25, can we get into the Visitor's Center at 9?
